Boise Cascade Sustainability Highlights

Wood is the ultimate earth-friendly building material that comes from a renewable resource and stores carbon for years to come. For the Weathervane project, Boise Cascade engaged WoodWorks to generate a carbon summary that detailed the many ways that Boise Cascade’s engineered wood products reduced or stored carbon emissions over the entire lifecycle of the development. The project resulted in a carbon benefit equivalent to removing 2,825 cars off the road for one year or enough energy to operate 1,411 homes for one year. We are proud to be part of a project with buildings designed to use 30 to 40 percent less energy than a typical code-compliant unit. This aligns us very closely with the developer’s focus and goals both now and in the future. Through our commitment to environmental stewardship, we actively contribute to the responsible use and protection of the natural resources, which benefits our associates, our customers, and the communities in which we work and live.

SawTek To reduce waste and use engineered wood products more efficiently, our customers can use our BCConnect ® software and SawTek ® systems. This technology combines software and hardware into an all-in-one saw system that calculates the optimum cutting strategy for each job. SawTek automatically cuts utility holes, then labels and organizes everything into framer-optimized job packs. By using SawTek to precision trim our engineered wood products in 2023, we were able to reduce 554,978 lineal feet of waste, which is equal to 1,736,246 pounds of waste in jobsite dumpsters. For lumberyards, it means they can more accurately forecast their inventory. For builders, it can mean reduced construction times or installation errors because everything is cut, labeled, and ready to go. Weathervane Community With a plan that called for 28 miles of engineered wood products, the Weathervane Community Project in Boulder, Colorado, was a perfect fit for both our business and our dedication to environmental stewardship. This development has 317 units of multi-family housing with 12,000 sq. ft. of commercial space and a myriad of recreational amenities — all built with a deep commitment to sustainability.
